Madly Creative
I don’t like to defend mediocrity, its safe and meaningless it does nothing to advance civilization in fact it is a prison of bland generic circumstances that placate the bourgeois and plebs alike. When did we become a society so against different? When did the biggest villain of the American dream become counterculture? We used to be great at protests and radicalism, free love…legalize weed… the dress is blue AND gold. In the most beautiful landscape of life, we hold moments of mania turned into beautiful expression, art rooted in suffering, poetry about pain, humor to capture the human experience and visualizations of a future so incomprehensible that if you speak about it to others you are labeled “unhinged.” THAT is the space in which dreamers, inventors, engineers, creators, producers and artists alike ebb and flow, in and out like an ocean wave.
Kanye West was never mediocre. This took a turn for you didn’t it? I know and I’m sorry…. perhaps I am one of the very few people who defend the creative, crass, complex, and troubled mind attached to this celebrity. I appreciate his mind. I appreciate the minds of a lot of unsavory characters in history also. I do struggle with things he has said in the media, a lot of his ideas… but perhaps the mania of his mental illness contributes to his utterances and his poor communication… it doesn’t forgive his hurtful statements, but he does have mental illness. I wonder about the popularity of a lot of deranged or “troubled” artists in the past. Vincent VanGogh was not popular. He famously lived in isolation, painted beautifully, and was posthumously diagnosed with severe bipolar disorder… but in his living life? People didn’t like him. Kurt Cobain was very popular… he earmarked an entire movement in youthful angst and expression, his bitter and raw voice smells like teen spirit and reverberates on the windows in malls across America to this day (as I am sure he dreamed his music would); he too was bipolar, and sadly, like Vincent Van Gogh he took his own life. The list is long, there is a touch of madness in a lot of influential people, in most creative types, but in radically creative influencers??… are they perhaps a little more touched?
Back to my feelings on Kanye. There is no one more supportive of Kanye “the Artist” and equally frustrated at Kanye “the disruptor” (twitter posting his nonsense with his dusty dick pickers) as I…. however, this is now and was always intended to be a Ye appreciation post. Below are the ten most fascinating and creative lyrics that Kanye West has impressed me with:
1) My childlike creativity, purity, and honesty is honestly being crowded by these grown thoughts.
2) I’m aware I’m a wolf… soon as the moon hit. I’m aware I’m a king back out the tomb bitch.
3) She’s my caddy ‘cause she grab my golf balls in the club.
4) Now I could let these dream killers kill my self-esteem or use my arrogance as the steam to power my dreams.
5) She got a light-skinned friend look like Michael Jackson-- Got a dark-skinned friend look like Michael Jackson
6) Luxury Rap, the Hermes of verses. Sophisticated ignorance, write my curses in cursive.
7) I love your titties ‘cause they prove I can stare at two things at once.
8) I’m livin in the future so the present is my past. My presence is a present, kiss my ass.
9) At the end of the day, goddammit, I’m killin this shit...I know damn well y’all feelin this shit, I don’t need your pussy, bitch, I’m on my own dick.
